When was the last time you thought about your mineral intake? Unless you’ve come to see me at the clinic recently, it’s likely been awhile. So…..let’s talk minerals.
Your body needs them. Our soil (and therefore our food supply) is extremely depleted of them. This is not great news for your health.
Your body needs minerals in order to do super important things like transfer nutrients across cell membranes and move oxygen through your blood. Mineral deficiency will affect your skin health, metabolism, bone health, inflammation & pain, energy levels, nerve & muscle function, & immune function. So like, basically all the things.
Generally speaking, I am a huge fan of getting your nutrients from food. When it comes to minerals, though, I HIGHLY recommend supplementing for two reasons. The first, as I mentioned, is that our soil and food supply is really depleted of minerals, so it’s harder to get them from food than it used to be. The second, is because the majority of us are SO mineral deficient that the amount we get from food isn’t nearly enough to have a therapeutic effect.
Here’s my favorite liquid trace mineral supplement. I put a few drops of it in every glass of water I drink (and no, I can’t taste it in there).
While we’re on the subject, here’s a list of some of my favorite mineral-rich foods: cruciferous veggies, leafy greens, nuts, dates, coconut meat & water, pears, apples, avocados, carrots, oats, bananas, papaya, fish, sweet potato, etc.
The moral of the mineral story is: eat whole foods rich in minerals AND supplement with an additional source of minerals for optimal results!
